Red Men and Savages, 2005, digital video

Red Men & Savages is a brief historic analysis of some of the American film industry's portrayals of Native Americans by White actors. Utilizing still images of the real actors, I juxtapose them against their reel portrayals providing a stark contrast between fiction and reality. Throughout the piece, I place four different scrolling text questioning the reality of the affect popular cinema has had upon the mainstream mindscape in shaping its understanding of Native Americans. Each film depicted is provided the four versions of text to question the viewer's understanding of Native Americans.
